Video Game Replicas

The ever-changing quality of video game graphics has taken characters from mere 8-bit sprites to fully fleshed out 3D models with textures so high-definition that you can tell leather from linen. I've separated out this gallery because I feel that video games are the in-between realm combining the challenges of both live-action replica and animated cosplay. And, perhaps, also because I have so many of these kinds of costumes that the galleries just got so full!

Sima Zhao
Dynasty Warriors 7

Included here are photos of the entire group, because I ended up doing a considerable chunk of the work on all four costumes. We wanted to do the whole Family of Jin as seen in Dynasty Warriors 7: Sima Yi, Sima Shi, Sima Zhao (me), and Wang Yuanji. The blue dyework on silk and cotton is courtesy of Vicky A, our Yuanji, and the embroidered trim was done by Junabi (Shi), who handles the art digitization for SLC, but the majority of the applique, black dyework, and all of the fitting was done by me.

Costume highlights:
  • All black patches on tunics are appliqued with gold edge-stitching
  • Sima Shi and Sima Yi feature additional black ombre dye
  • paint work on Zhao's armor and pants and Sima Yi's hat is all mine
  • Wang Yuanji features custom-fitted dress with silver lame appliqued onto silk velvet
Awards:
  • Best In Show, Workmanship - CostumeCon31, Denver, 2013

Ferid Egan
Suikoden V

The one thing I really love about Suikoden V is the gold-and-black of the Queen's Knights' uniforms. A friend wanted to do Queen Arshtat, so I decided that I would do Commander Ferid to accompany her. I liked his outfit less than, say, Kyle or Georg, but in the end, I really liked how it came out. I love the makeup and wig - I love my soul patch! But I also love the neat, clean look of the triangle trim. It is entirely pieced together so that there would be no visible stitches. Many long hours went into this costume and it paid off.

Costume highlights:
  • surcoat is wool, with all the correct seams seen in the game
  • back sashes are fade-dyed, done in a bucket in my bathtub
  • faux suede leather armor underneath is a full piece, not just parts which show at the sides
  • sword is not actually a sword, just a hilt in a hollow scabbard so it would be lightweight. That ivory scabbard? A white-erase board
Awards:
  • Best In Show - CONvergence 2009

Geddoe
Suikoden III

It's clear by now I'm a big fan of the Suikoden games. One of the three playable heroes in III, Geddoe gave me the opportunity to learn and hone my leathercraft. The jerkin is 99% real leather - only the gray trim is vinyl. I wanted it as realistic as possible, right down to the leather eyepatch. Even the boots are custom-made to have the correct ridges and flaps, built on top of a pair of Mary Jane platform shoes.

Costume highlights:
  • chap suede straps are custom-colored with watered down acrylic paint
  • epaulets are wet-formed
  • sword is paperclay over basswood with cloth-wrapped handle
Awards:
  • Hall costume ribbon - Archon 2008

Sasarai (Bishop Uniform)
Suikoden II/III

There is only one existing picture of the actual outfit, and it only shows Sasarai's full Bishop's robes from the torso up. Working with that single picture from the Suikoden III artbook (though he never appears in the outfit in the game, it only flashes past in the opening animation for about a second) and extrapolations from the Gaiden and card series artwork, I completed this costume for competition purposes. It went on stage solo at CostumeCon 27.

Costume highlights:
  • majority of clothing is wool and faux suede, with gold soutache braid
  • hat built from scratch, interior shell is auto headliner foam with some plastic corset boning
  • tabard is actually craft foam with fabric glued on top to eliminate visible stitches
Awards:
  • Judge's Award "Best Extrapolation From a Single Source" - CostumeCon 27, 2009
  • Judge's Award "Best Punchline" - CostumeCon 27, 2009

Jacques
Suikoden III

This costume made me have to admit that I have a coat fetish. The complex details to this mercenary coat drove me to do it, though it took me time to painstakingly get them all right. Making the entire thing in turquoise canvas didn't help. Suikoden characters also have ridiculously detailed pants. The entire ensemble seems designed for a winter climate, but the sweater is sleeveless so I can take off my coat to be comfortable.

Costume highlights:
  • knitted the ribbed sweater myself, it took over a year
  • secret pockets in the coat are fully functional
  • canvas coat has layered yoke with chest straps, no closures otherwise - it stays closed through friction and straps

Hero "Lazlo"
Suikoden IV

Roleplaying video games have the greatest number of complex, interesting costumes to recreate. I fell in love with the Hero of Suikoden IV after watching his backside run through the game for fifty hours, and man, did I want his swords.

The main photo here shows another costume I did for a friend, Snowe (from the same game). I sewed the vest and boot covers.

Costume highlights:
  • Uniquely trimmed seams in jacket
  • Armor is Rigidwrap (plaster) covered in Hearty clay
  • Swords are completely wood, paperclay, and leather (grips)
  • Belt is completely made from scratch, stained, and riveted
Awards:
  • Hall costume ribbon - CostumeCon 25, 2007

Helena (black variant)
Dead or Alive 3

This costume is also featured on my Ring Game page, because I first constructed it to play a "sexy" Sauron. After the game was over, I styled a long blond wig in the character's hairstyle in order to wear the costume, complete, as a video game replica to conventions.

Costume highlights:
  • Gold scrolling on skirt is fabric paint
  • Bodice personally tailored to my shape in order to eliminate visible closures
  • Skirt closure hidden by one of the side-panels with gold studs
