Personal Gallery - Ring Game

Just a few of the costumes I have been seen wearing while playing twice annually in the local LARP "Ring Game." For more information, visit the Unofficial Ring Game page. Most of these costumes are not replicas, but original designs meant to fit the character roles chosen.

Theoden King
Spring 2009

I had enough time on my hands to go all out on Theoden. Mostly to create the coat with more pieces and trim than I usually put into my costumes, using green fabrics out of my stash. The shield was a gift from a friend with a woodworking shop in his garage, though I decorated it to be a shield of Rohan as described in the books.

Costume highlights:
  • twill coat with tailored sleeves, applique, trim, and white horse emblem
  • wooden shield painted with horse emblem of Rohan
  • I straightened a curly costume beard, then braided it and put horse beads in
Much of the underclothing is recycled from old costumes.

Shelob
"Geisha Shelob"
Fall 2009

Sometimes people do their Ring Game costumes as a concept. I thought this one up after seeing Halloween cotton prints in the store, and after a few years got to bring it to life. Yes, it's Shelob the tempting spider done as a geisha.

Costume highlights:
  • Cotton print kimono and obi done in spider-web prints, with spiderweb sheer shawl on top
  • hair sticks in wig have plastic spiders!
  • Inside joke: there is a back fan in the obi with "okama" written on it

Barrow Wight
Fall 2002

I designed and sewed a number of pieces for this costume including the:
  • Gray tunic
  • Black cape with cowl
  • Vambraces
  • Leg armor
I also built the circlet and rings myself out of faux jewels and wire. The shirt and pants came from a thrift shop, along with the necklaces.

Reprised Spring 2005 with better makeup (second photo).

Prince Imrahil
Spring 2003

This costume was actually designed based on Hiei's Dark Tournament outfit from YuYu Hakusho. Check out my page of Personal Cosplay projects to see how I converted this costume to the replica from the anime.

Costume highlights:
  • Leather leg armor with elastic gore to keep it tight on my legs
  • Tabard with Prince Imrahil's emblem of the swan-ship in white and silver ribbon trim (as per the book)
I found the shirt at a thrift shop, and hunted for a blue fabric to match to make the cowl.

Sauron
Fall 2004

This is my most complicated, expensive, and favorite costume to date.

The details of its construction can be found under Personal Replicas as Helena from DOA3, since I made the costume as exact a replica as I could with the intention of wearing it again at conventions once the game was over.

I did conquer Middle-Earth in this thing, by the way.

Gil-galad
Second Age 2004

This outfit was personally designed and completed in roughly four days.

Costume highlights:
  • Blue linen tunic with false Chinese closure
  • Blue sash
  • A silver greatcoat designed to emulate many styles of military or trenchcoat designs found in anime
  • Emblem painted and appliqued on back to replicate the House of Gil-galad crest devised by Tolkien himself

Galadriel
Fall 2003

This version of Galadriel pulls together influences from several different sources to create an "anime elf."

Rather than having a nondescript bulky coat, I specifically designed the tunic and sash to be reminiscent of Kurama from YuYu Hakusho.

Costume highlights:
  • Boot covers (my pride and joy) based off something from Yu-Gi-Oh!
  • Kneecaps are wooden coasters from Hobby Lobby painted silver then glued onto leather strips which fasten behind my knee
  • Stirrups were built out of leather and hardware and designed so that the covers hid my running shoes
  • Armbands are Foamies craft foam painted gold
  • Circlet is fake decorator ivy
And yes, that is a wig.

Tom Bombadil
Spring 2001

Bright blue his jacket is, and his boots are yellow!

Tthe blue coat and yellow "boot" socks were designed and sewed by yours truly for accuracy to character.

Costume highlight:
  • Boot socks fit over hiking boots and wrap crosswise up to the knee.

Radagast
Fall 2001

The robe for Radagast is actually my prototype Jedi robe from my very first replica attempt.

The only additional item I sewed for this costume was the sash. It was made out of leftover wool from other robes. Everything else is closet-raided.

Thranduil
Second Age (beta) 2002

I sewed the tabard, designing it to have a vaguely anime look to it while being utterly unique. Leaves were then appliqued on to fit the motif.

Other costumes not shown:

  • Legolas - Fall 2000

  • Frodo - Spring 2002
Mostly recycled from past costumes, except for the pants and furry feet which came from a briefly-worn Sam Gamgee movie replica (from the FOTR premiere party)

Recycled pretty much all of it from Frodo
  • Elrond - Fall 2005
Recycled most of it from Gil-galad

Concept costume - the Corsairs were Sailor Scouts. I was Mercury.
